Honestly, there's a fanfic to written about what the poor Betan
Ambassador to Barrayar was doing during the whole mess with Cordelia's
defection to Barrayar, marriage to a war criminal, and then bringing
back Vordarian's head at the climax of the coup.

That is a fic I would love to read.

Possibly nothing. I would bet that the Betan ambassador was recalled when, if not before, the Betans started supplying arms and providing support to Escobar.

I wonder how fast diplomatic relations would have been restored, though. There was all the time Cordelia was in the prisoner of war camp, and negotiations for that, and then she traveled back to Beta and was there for probably a couple of weeks, and then traveled back to Barrayar. Aral had had time to be mustered out of service and fall into a routine of drunkenness and self-destruction.

I doubt if the Betan's had a full embassy open, yet, and probably wouldn't for a few years. But They have to have had someone there to handle the treaty details, right?

What if it was someone who was just arriving on-planet at about the same time Cordelia was? That would make it even worse!

I imagine drinking heavily and questioning their life choices... I'd read it. Even better if it's some minor functionary (who didn't vote for him either).
