So, there was some interest in the group of doing a "getting to know you" in the form of a Vorkosiverse reread.

If people are still interested in this, it might be nice to take it in single chunks (novels/novellas/short stories each being one chunk - not omnibus collections being one chunk) and in either publication or timeline order. In that case, the first book we'd read would either be Falling Free or Shards of Honor.

Which do people prefer as the first book?

When would people prefer to start? I was considering late May, perhaps; that's a long time from now, but it also gives plenty of time for new community members to show up and introduce themselves once the site enters open beta, plus it gives plenty of time for people's school years (if they have them) to be wrapping up. (Or does that just conflict with finals week?)

What are your thoughts? Certainly if the people who'd be re-reading can't do a certain time or don't want to do a certain book, we won't do it that way!

I'm game for a reread, as long as it's Shards of Honour. I'd have to skip Falling Free because it is harder to get hold of (for those of us who have recently moved halfway across Canada and left our libraries on the East Coast).

We should wait until just after open beta to start as there is bound to be a lot of new people turning up and it seems rude not to wait for them. Mid or late May would be great!

I'm definitely up for this, but have no strong opinions on where we start. (Though I do wonder if my copy of _Falling Free_ has wandered off, as I have not seen it recently.)

I think I'd prefer to start out with Shards of Honor, even though it means having to track it down (I read it from the library and never bought a copy of my own).

Late May is good. That'll give people time to find the books if they don't have them and maybe publicize the reread.

Shards of Honor is available as an ebook from Baen; it's combined with Barrayar in a single ebook called Cordelia's Honor for $5. I believe the entire setof her Vorkosigan books are available; Falling Free is part of the "Miles, Mutants & Microbes" set, also for $5.

I know plenty of people won't touch ebooks, but if someone can't get a paper copy in time for a re-read, it's nice to have *something* available. And Baen's books are downloadable in something like a dozen formats, with no DRM.

THis sounds like an excellent scheme. I originally read the series *backwards*, since the first one I found was A Civil Campaign, and I progressed via Komarr, Memory... A proper re-read in order is a good plan.

It may amuse to know that the reason the book caught my eye in the first place that I was reading a conversation (on alt.callahans) about a photo of a Chihuaua attempting to mate with a Great Dane. Somebody enquired, Was the chihuaua's name Miles?

Sounds interesting, and I *might* have time after May 15 (end of semester).

I'd prefer to start with Shards of Honor. Late May does sound like a good idea to encourage more participants.

(I don't know about others, but I'm done with classes as of May 7, although I'll be out in the field for a while in late May/early June, so I may not be around for the first book discussion.)
