4th smoothed over a lot of the inconsistencies that had been sprouting up organically. 3rd still worked fine on its own, but combining it with some of the additional skills/powers/etc that showed up in various sourcebooks got imbalanced sometimes.
There's a free conversion notes PDF somewhere on the SJGames site, explaining how to convert 3ed to 4ed characters. And sourcebooks are still plenty readable without knowing 4ed, but before attempting to use them, people should know the basics of the differences in 4ed (different stat costs and so on) so the 4ed write-ups don't seem badly off from what they should be.
Now I'll have to figure out how soon I can afford a $30 ebook. Sigh.
